Use Yoghurt: You Don’t Have to Throw Anything Away

Yoghurt that is open or has expired can be used in a number of ways. Yoghurt is a real all-around talent both in culinary terms – for example as a cake or dressing – and in the beauty and household sectors.

Use yoghurt: sweet and savoury delicacies

Anyone who has bought a large pack of yoghurt that is now open in the fridge often wonders what to do with the opened yoghurt. If you don’t feel like yoghurt with fruit or yoghurt with muesli all the time, you can try something new.

  • You can make refreshing snacks from open yoghurt. These are quick and easy and very tasty. For this, you take different berries such as strawberries, raspberries or blueberries. Dip the fruit in the yoghurt and place it in the freezer on a baking paper-lined surface for three hours.
  • Yoghurt that has been open for some time but is still edible can be wonderfully processed into a cake. Try a yoghurt sponge cake that’s quick and easy to make.
  • The yoghurt becomes hearty with garlic, sugar, salt, pepper and a little vinegar. The dressing goes perfectly with salads. If you leave the whole thing a little thicker or mix it with quark, you also have a delicious dip for vegetable sticks or meat skewers.

Yoghurt against mould or for more moisture on the skin

If the yoghurt is sour and therefore no longer edible, that does not mean that it has to be thrown away. By the way: Even after the best-before date has passed, yoghurt can often still be eaten. Do the smell and taste test.

  • Yoghurt that is no longer edible can be used as a moisturizing face mask. For this, two tablespoons of yoghurt are mixed with a teaspoon of honey and half a mashed banana. The mass is applied to the face and décolleté and left on for 15 minutes. The mask is then rinsed off with lukewarm water.
  • You can also use yoghurt to polish tarnished or dirty brass back to a high gloss. Brass cutlery, for example, can be thickly coated with yoghurt. After an exposure time of one hour, the yoghurt is rinsed off with warm water. Then polish the brass with a clean cloth.
  • Yoghurt can be used to remove mould from textiles. The lactic acid bacteria in the yoghurt fight mould effectively and naturally. For this, the yoghurt is given to the affected areas. Leave the yoghurt on the clothing for several hours. Then wash in the washing machine as usual.
