Even vegans are reluctant to say no to a refreshing vanilla ice cream or a piece of cream cake: They don’t have to, because with a little background knowledge, such delicacies can also be enjoyed without ingredients of animal origin.
Cake, ice cream & co.: vegan sweets
Classic sweets such as milk chocolate, fruit gums, milk ice cream, quark and yoghurt desserts and cheesecake are a real treat and pure pleasure. However, those who follow a vegan diet ignore them, as they contain all foods of animal origin. These are not always recognizable at first glance, such as the dairy products in cream dishes or gelatine in marshmallows. There is milk sugar in chocolate, even if it is a different kind than milk chocolate, liquorice candies are coated with beeswax. And sodas are often far from vegan drinks because they contain dyes derived from lice. You are on the safe side if you cook vegan dishes yourself or bake them vegan yourself. If you don’t have the time, it’s good to know which ingredients you should pay particular attention to in finished products. In addition to our vegan lemon cake, our vegan chocolate muffins are also a quick baking option, for which you only have to work for 20 minutes.
Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids are often found in sweet pastries. The substances produced in a chemical process usually serve as an emulsifier and were usually obtained from plant starting products – but not always. If in doubt, you should avoid such products and bake your own vegan cakes, snacks and biscuits such as vegan cinnamon stars. Healthy sweets are also more likely to be produced in the home kitchen, since you can regulate the amount of sugar yourself and replace it with fructose-free alternatives such as rice syrup if necessary. Incidentally, honey is not vegan and therefore not a suitable sweetener for vegan sweets.
Vegan desserts, vegan chocolate, pralines, and truffles
Truffles and pralines can be made well with dried dates. They can be processed into a mush that holds the other ingredients such as ground almonds and baking cocoa together nicely. There is a wide variety of vegan chocolate: It contains plant-based milk alternatives. With soy or oat cream you can also prepare good vegan desserts, such as a cream dish or ice cream. Banana or apple pulp and coconut milk are other ingredients that can be used to conjure up delicious vegan sweets. Fruit gum and liquorice fans use products with vegetable gelling agents such as agar-agar.
Incidentally, the same applies to vegan sweets as to classic pralines, bars, and desserts: they should only be enjoyed in moderation. Because the vegan diet is no more or less suitable for losing weight than a diet with animal products. This also applies to the vegan sweets.
