Washing Your Hair: Four Tips

Shampoo on, lather head, rinse off, done. Anyone can wash their hair. Or? In fact, there are a few things to keep in mind with this procedure. With our four tips, you can optimize your beauty routine in no time at all.

Brush your hair beforehand

The first thing you do when you wash your hair is not the shampoo, but the brush. Because only carefully untangled hair can be gently washed. In a tousled mane, knots quickly form when it comes into contact with water. You then have to laboriously remove them from your wet hair. The problem with this: the fibers are much more sensitive when wet. Strong tugging and pulling strains them twice. So be sure to comb your mane beforehand.

Adjust the frequency according to your hair type

How often should you actually wash your hair? The following applies here: Adjust the frequency to your own personal hair type. Accordingly, women and men with normal hair can use shampoo every day.

For brittle and stressed hair, however, only 3-4 times a week is recommended. The same applies to hair care in old age when the hair becomes drier. The surfactants in the shampoo dissolve valuable fats from the fibers, which are already low in moisture anyway – which only become weaker as a result. So do not wash your hair every day and prefer to freshen up your hair with dry shampoo in between.

The same goes for ladies and gentlemen with greasy hair. But the reason here is different. When lathering, you stimulate the sebum production of the scalp. The result: the tissue only produces more fat. So avoid washing your hair every day.

Wash your hair lukewarm

This tip applies to both showering and washing your hair: Use lukewarm water! Heat stresses your hair just like it does your skin. Finally, hot water dissolves lipids from the tissue – which dries out faster. The result is a brittle mane.

At the end of your hair wash, we recommend a quick switch to ice-cold water. The cold closes the cuticle layer that has been roughened by the shampoo. This gives a nice shine.

Use little shampoo

When it comes to washing your hair, the following applies: less is more. An extra portion of shampoo and conditioners doesn’t clean your hair particularly well, it actually weighs it down. Accordingly, women with hair up to shoulder length should only use a hazelnut-sized amount of shampoo. Add one more drop for every inch.

Incidentally, it is sufficient to spread the foamed product in your hands only in the beginning. By rinsing out, the foam finally stretches out by itself.

By the way: According to a current GfK survey (as of 2019), almost 15 million of all Germans over the age of 14 wash their hair every day. Another 40 million said they used shampoo, conditioner, and the like several times a week.
