What Is a Tureen? Easily Explained

What is a terrine – probably the most common answer

For many people, the first thing that comes to mind when they hear the term tureen is the 5-minute tureen.

  • However, the term has nothing to do with that. Rather, specific crockery is often meant. More precisely, it is a large soup bowl.
  • A soup tureen is a large, often bulbous bowl with a lid. The lid is used to keep the soup warm.
  • In it, soups or stews are prepared and placed on the table. Everyone can use it to put soup on their plate, and it’s easy to have second helpings with this serving method.
  • Soup tureens are mostly made of porcelain and often richly decorated. Sometimes small feet are attached to the bottom.
  • The upper edge often has a small cut-out for the soup ladle so that the lid can rest on it.

Terrine – the pie without pastry

Pates without a pastry shell are also referred to as terrines.

  • The pies are enjoyed cold. A classic among the terrines is the chicken liver pâté. In contrast, meatloaf is not actually a pie, i.e. not a terrine. However, meatloaf is also prepared in loaf pans.
  • The term terrine not only describes the pie itself, but also the form in which it is prepared.
  • It is usually in the form of a box.
  • Terrine molds are usually made of ceramic or metal.
