The Keto Sausage was a popular boiled sausage in the former GDR. To be eaten, it was heated in hot water and placed in a long, hollowed-out bun. Buns and sausages were then dipped in ketchup. Accordingly, the name of the sausage is made up of the terms “ketchup” and “sausage”. Visually, the snack meal is reminiscent of a Fransk hot dog.
The dish was invented in the late 1970s for a very specific reason: it was to be sold on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz to provide visitors with a snack. The on-site gastronomy is said to have been no longer able to cope with the crowds. For this reason, the spread of the Keto Sausage was largely concentrated in the center of East Berlin. In the meantime, the Keto Sausage is experiencing a renaissance and is being offered again at individual sales stands in Berlin.
