Packaging tips: How to store cheese
In general, you should be clear: types of cheese have different shelf lives. Because of its lower water content, hard cheese lasts longer than soft cheeses. However, you should pack both types of cheese. Open cheese not only absorbs fridge odors but also spoils much faster.
- Of course, you should keep cheese in the fridge. The vegetable compartment is particularly suitable as a place here. This is where the taste of the cheese is least affected by other foods. In addition, the temperatures there are best suited for the cheese.
- Also, don’t pack cheese completely airtight. Cheese paper works best. This cheese paper consists of a transparent film (use cling film) and a normal paper (e.g. greaseproof paper is suitable here). These two layers protect the cheese while still allowing it to breathe.
- If moisture forms around the cheese, change the foil and paper. Otherwise, your cheese could quickly begin to mold.
- If the cheese smells, you can store it in a plastic box in the fridge.
- To avoid mold in general, you should only cut cheese with a clean knife. Also, avoid contact with breadcrumbs. Any foreign substances will reduce the shelf life of the cheese.
- With the right tricks, you can also freeze cheese.
Cheese from the refrigerated counter, from the package, and different types – of storage differences
- If you bought packaged cheese from the refrigerated section, it is best to leave the cheese in the original packaging. In any case, make sure that the package is carefully closed.
- Cheese from the cheese counter usually has a shorter shelf life. Keep the different types of cheese packed separately from each other. To do this, separate the cheese with cling film. It is best to let the cheese continue to breathe through the rind.
- There are also differences in storage between the different types of cheese: Cream cheese should be closed completely. This type of cheese does not need to breathe airtightly.
- It is best to store soft cheeses such as Camembert in an air-permeable plastic container.
