Cat’s claw – a miracle cure of nature?
Numerous healing effects are attributed to the cat’s claw. However, most of the effects have not been proven.
- The cat’s claw is said to have a positive effect on various viral infections such as herpes or even HIV.
- In the area of the gastrointestinal tract, the plant is said to have a whole range of positive effects: cat’s claw is said to help you with inflammation of the gastric mucosa or a stomach ulcer, diverticulitis, and inflammation of the large intestine as well as hemorrhoids and infections with parasites.
- Cat’s claw is even said to be effective in Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
- Cat’s claw is said to have an anti-inflammatory effect and stimulate the immune system. The so-called pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids contained in the plant are primarily responsible for this. The tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids also contained can weaken precisely this effect.
- Only in the case of rheumatoid arthritis has the healing effect of the plant actually been proven.
Cat’s claw tea
In order to achieve a targeted effect of the plant, the plant is usually used in the form of capsules as a remedy. The different effects of the ingredients are taken into account in the composition.
- This is not the case with tea or dietary supplements. On the one hand, both the effect and side effects have not been sufficiently researched. On the other hand, the undefined combination of ingredients can even lead to health risks.
- Possible side effects – also of the cat’s claw produced as a medicine – can be slight gastrointestinal complaints.
- Higher amounts of the tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids contained in a cat’s claw – as can be the case with tea – can trigger undesirable cardiovascular effects such as a drop in blood pressure.
- You should not take any preparations made from cat’s claw, neither during pregnancy nor while breastfeeding. There is no evidence of harmlessness in this regard. This also applies if you are trying to get pregnant. In this case, it is better to do without the cat’s claw – no matter in which form.
