Ingredients for 1 servings:
- 8 fish fillets (salted herring fillets or matjes), cut into bite-sized pieces
- 500 ml red wine vinegar
- 150 g sugar
- 150 g red onion(s) in rings
- 1 small carrot(s), sliced
- 1 piece(s) ginger (1 cm), peeled, sliced
- 30 g horseradish, peeled, sliced
- 6 grains of allspice
- 3 tbsp mustard seeds
- 4 bay leaves

Boil the vinegar with the sugar until the sugar dissolves, then let it cool. Alternately fill a large jar with the fish, all the vegetables, and the spices. Pour in the cooled marinade, ensuring everything is well covered. Let the fish marinate in the sealed jar in a cool place for 2-3 days. Tip: Serve with buttered brown bread or boiled potatoes.
