Ingredients for 1 servings:

  • 8 fish fillets (salted herring fillets or matjes), cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 500 ml red wine vinegar
  • 150 g sugar
  • 150 g red onion(s) in rings
  • 1 small carrot(s), sliced
  • 1 piece(s) ginger (1 cm), peeled, sliced
  • 30 g horseradish, peeled, sliced
  • 6 grains of allspice
  • 3 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 4 bay leaves

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Rest period approx. 2 days; Total time approx. 2 days 20 minutes

Boil the vinegar with the sugar until the sugar dissolves, then let it cool. Alternately fill a large jar with the fish, all the vegetables, and the spices. Pour in the cooled marinade, ensuring everything is well covered. Let the fish marinate in the sealed jar in a cool place for 2-3 days. Tip: Serve with buttered brown bread or boiled potatoes.
