Scandinavian herring salad

Mix all ingredients except the herring and onions together to make a marinade. Pat the drained herring dry, cut into approximately 1 cm pieces, and mix with the onions into the marinade. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight. Then stir again and sprinkle with fresh dill, if desired. Tomatsild is an easy-to-prepare herring dish that is a staple on any Scandinavian breakfast buffet.
