Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 1 large onion(s)
- 1 garlic clove(s)
- 400 ml tomatoes, pureed or pizza tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp basil, dried
- 1 tbsp oregano, dried
- 200 ml crème fraîche or sour cream
- 12 slices of toast
- 8 slices of cooked ham
- 8 slices of semi-hard cheese
- 1 ball of mozzarella
- 200 g cheese, grated
- salt and pepper
- possibly sugar
- some olive oil for frying
Instructions
Working time approx. 20 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 20 minutes; Total time approx. 40 minutes
In a pan, fry the finely chopped onion in olive oil and add the crushed garlic. Pour in the passata and crème fraîche. Season everything generously with salt, pepper, herbs, and sugar, if desired. If you use ready-made tomato sauce (I had some leftover from the day before), you don’t need as much seasoning. Let the sauce simmer briefly. Meanwhile, cut the mozzarella into eight slices. Spread a little sauce in a large, preferably square, baking dish. Place four slices of toast on top (or cut the bread into the right shape beforehand). Spread a few spoonfuls of sauce on the toast and place four slices of ham and four slices of semi-hard cheese on top. Place a slice of mozzarella in the center of the cheese slices. Place a second layer in the dish in the same order, starting with the slices of toast. The third and final layer of toast forms the lid. Spread a little sauce on top and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (fan oven) for about 20 minutes on the middle rack. Serve with a green salad.
