If you swallow aluminum foil, don’t panic. There is no risk of poisoning. However, be careful with children as there is still a risk of suffocation.
What happens if you swallow aluminum foil
The aluminum foil does not cause poisoning in the stomach. The foil simply does not get digested and is excreted as it was swallowed.
- So don’t worry if you accidentally eat some aluminum foil with fast food, for example. As long as it doesn’t get stuck in your throat, you’re fine.
- However, do not use salts or acids when cooking with aluminum foil. Otherwise harmful aluminum ions can detach and get onto your food.
Keep the film out of the reach of children
If your child has swallowed aluminum foil, you should be alert.
- If children crumple up the aluminum foil and play with it, there is a risk of suffocation.
- So always keep the film in inaccessible drawers. If necessary, provide them with an additional child safety device.
