American sausage casserole (for breakfast – but not only!)

Ingredients for 12 servings:

  • 12 slice(s) bread(s) (sandwich bread)
  • some butter for the mold
  • 450 g sausage meat, coarse
  • ½ tsp sage, dried
  • 280 g Cheddar cheese, sharp, grated
  • 250 ml milk
  • 250 ml whipped cream, liquid
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 5 large eggs, lightly beaten

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Rest time approx. 8 hours; Cooking/baking time approx. 1 hour; Total time approx. 9 hours 10 minutes

Sausage Breakfast Casserole – simply delicious!

Please note: This preparation requires a resting time of at least 8 hours overnight. Grease a 24 x 30 cm dish with butter. Cut the bread slices into approximately 2 cm cubes and arrange them on the bottom of the dish. Brown the sausage meat in a pan on the stove over medium heat, breaking it into small pieces and frying until all the pieces are cooked through. Remove the sausage pieces from the pan with a slotted spoon and distribute them evenly over the bread cubes, then sprinkle the cheese on top. In a bowl, mix the milk, heavy cream, mustard powder, salt, and eggs and pour this mixture over the cheese. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight so that all the ingredients are well combined. The next day, preheat the oven to 175°C (bottom heat if possible, otherwise top/bottom heat). Place the foil-covered dish in the oven and bake the casserole for 50 minutes. Remove the aluminum foil; the casserole should be lightly browned and firm. If it’s too light and not yet firm, bake uncovered for another 5-10 minutes. Remove the dish from the oven and let the casserole stand for 15 minutes before serving.
