Antonia's baked fennel

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 4 bulbs of fennel, approx. 1 kg
  • salt and pepper
  • Sugar
  • 4 slice(s) cooked ham, cut into strips
  • 125 g cheese (medium-aged Gouda or Emmental)
  • 30 g butter

Instructions

Working time approx. 15 minutes; Total time approx. 15 minutes

Trim the fennel and cook in boiling salted water with 1/4 teaspoon of sugar for 30-40 minutes, then drain. Halve the bulbs and place them in a baking dish. Roll up strips of ham and place them between the fennel bulbs. Season with freshly ground pepper. Sprinkle with small slices of cheese and flakes of butter. Bake at 200°C for about 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
