Ayran is Healthy: You Should Know That About the Milk Drink

Ayran is healthy and keeps fit. The national drink of Turkey is often offered to guests there as a welcome. The yoghurt drink is now known worldwide and is enjoying ever-increasing popularity.

That’s what makes Ayran so healthy

Ayran is a yogurt drink. It tastes slightly sour, so not everyone likes it. The dish is made from just three foods and is therefore very easy to imitate yourself. You only need yogurt, water and some salt. In Turkey, sheep’s milk is traditionally used for this. The health benefits are as follows:

  • Hardly any sugar : There are only 2 grams of carbohydrates in 100 grams of Ayran. Fats are also only represented with 2 grams. So Ayran belongs on the low carb list.
  • Hardly any calories : There are only 35 kilocalories for 100 grams of Ayran. There are usually more in other dairy products.
  • Hardly any lactose : Ayran contains very little lactose. The yoghurt-water mixture is therefore well tolerated.
  • Plenty of minerals and trace elements : the calcium it contains strengthens bones and teeth, potassium and sodium are good for nerves and muscles.
  • Plenty of good bacteria : Lactic acid bacteria are contained in the Ayran. These promote your intestinal health. With the drink you build a healthy intestinal flora.
  • Salt balance : If you drink Ayran after a sporting activity where you have sweated a lot, you can compensate for the loss with the salt it contains.
  • Lose weight with Ayran : The drink contains hardly any calories and fats, but it does contain protein. So, this food can help you lose weight.

Make healthy Ayran yourself

Ayran is very easy to make yourself. You need 200 g of yoghurt made from sheep’s or cow’s milk, 100 ml of water and a pinch of salt.

  • Put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix them with a whisk. The less fat the yoghurt used has, the more liquid the drink will be.
  • Whip up the mixture and serve it ice cold. You can also refine the finished Ayran with basil or lemon balm.
  • In summer, Ayran is a popular drink after exercise. Otherwise, it is often served as an accompaniment to spicy dishes. Here it is drunk directly after the meal.
  • You can also use Ayran as a cocktail. For two people, mix together 4 stalks of coriander, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 6 tbsp crushed ice, 150ml Ayran, 150ml coconut water and the pulp of an avocado. Season to taste with a pinch of salt and some Tabasco.
