Buy all your food from an organic store if possible—only the best for your little one! Besides carrots, add one or two other vegetables. So far, we’ve tried beetroot, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, pumpkin, parsnips, swede, and zucchini. But there’s plenty more to try. Beef is preferable for its high iron content. However, pork, chicken, and turkey can be used for variety. Steam the washed and roughly chopped vegetables and meat until tender. The vegetables can still have a slightly firm core, so most of the nutrients are retained. Place the vegetables, meat, and five-grain flakes in a bowl, add about 100-200 ml of the cooking water, and blend everything. The puree should still be quite thick. Pour the finished puree into small containers, each holding about 180-200 ml, and cool quickly (in a water bath or refrigerator). If necessary, take about 150g of puree and mix with a little boiling water until the right consistency is reached. The puree should be warm enough. Add 1 teaspoon of rapeseed oil and ½ teaspoon of walnut oil and mix well. Feed to baby. Steaming is recommended, as this preserves most of the nutrients. Don’t let the vegetables get too soft, as otherwise too many nutrients are lost. There are so-called steamer inserts for every pot size. The meat can be cooked with the vegetables. Usually, some unsightly protein oozes out. But it’s nothing serious; simply puree it with the mixture; it won’t be visible, and your baby won’t complain. Add the rapeseed oil and walnut oil at the very end, as heating the oils destroys the unsaturated fatty acids. Unsaturated fatty acids are important for brain development. Walnut oil is very expensive (100ml approx. €5). If that’s too expensive for you, you can simply replace the 1/2 teaspoon with 2 more teaspoons of rapeseed oil. We’ve read about using butter instead of oil in many recipes. We strongly advise against this and all other cow’s milk products for children under 1 year old. They can trigger or exacerbate allergies.
