Oregano gives many dishes a strong, spicy aroma. There are different varieties of the herb: in addition to the oregano from the Mediterranean region, which is widespread in this country, there is also a Mexican and Greek variant of the herb, for example. Mexican oregano is a local plant that is only distantly related to the Mediterranean variety but has a very similar taste. Greek oregano, on the other hand, tastes particularly intense.

The tart-bitter, piquant-aromatic aroma with a slight spiciness is particularly intense when seasoned with dried oregano. In principle, the typical Italian spice can also be processed fresh. It goes well with various savory dishes, including focaccia, and can be combined with most other Mediterranean spices, such as rosemary, thyme, bay leaf, or sage.

  • Tomato dishes: Not only pizza but also many other tomato dishes harmonize perfectly with the aroma of oregano. Southern Italian cuisine in particular seasons tomato soups and sauces with spice, which is primarily associated with pizza in this country. It is often combined with basil or capers.
  • Meat: Veal and pork, in particular, can be prepared spicy and aromatic with the help of oregano. Traditionally in Italy, the sauce for these meats is seasoned with oregano, which is often made from tomatoes. In addition, garlic is often added. In the USA and Mexico, too, traditional meat dishes are often refined with oregano – the Mexican variant of the herb is used here. Chili con carne, for example, gets part of its flavor in this way. Various wraps with meat, beans, or corn can also be flavored with oregano.
  • Stews, soups, and casseroles: Oregano flavors various savory dishes based on meat and vegetables. The dried herbs should be cooked for at least 15 minutes so that they can fully develop their flavor. Especially potato soups or casseroles with potatoes are very aromatic in combination with oregano.
  • Tea: Oregano can also be drunk as tea by pouring boiling water over it when dry and letting it steep for a few minutes. The tea has a beneficial effect on cold symptoms and has an antibacterial effect. Oregano can also have a positive effect on stomach cramps and digestive problems.
