Oregano Oil: Effects and Uses of the Natural Antibiotic

Oregano is not only used in the kitchen, but as an oil it can also be good for your health. Depending on the application, you can treat and prevent a wide variety of diseases.

Application of oregano oil

You can buy oregano oil in capsule or liquid form. It is made from the oregano herb using a steam process.

  • Unless the oil is already diluted anyway, it should be mixed with another good quality oil. Make sure the ratio is 1:20.
  • When taken internally, one drop in the morning is recommended. If you have swallowed the oil regularly for a week, you can take an additional drop at noon and in the evening.
  • You can also add 1-3 drops of the oil to a tea from time to time. This helps especially with coughs and colds.
  • Oregano oil is also available as a capsule, which is usually composed of the essential oils of the plant, sunflower oil, glycerin and gelatin. Here you can take 1 to 2 capsules a day.
  • For external use, mix two drops of the oil with 250ml of water. Then you can dab the mixture onto the skin with a cotton pad or a soft cloth. Ideally, do not wash it off and let it soak in.
  • However, test beforehand whether there is an intolerance. In this case, you should refrain from using it.
  • The oil is also great for inhaling. Here you put 5 drops in a liter of boiling water.
  • If you don’t have dried or fresh oregano handy, you can use the oil for cooking. Mix it with 100ml olive oil.

The versatile effect

Oregano contains essential oils, bitter and tannins, as well as vitamin C. These ingredients are responsible for the healing effect of the plant.

  • Because of the essential oils, the oil is often used to relieve the symptoms of a cold.
  • They also help strengthen the immune system.
  • Oregano oil is also said to help fight both external and internal fungi, mainly Candida.
  • The tannins and bitter substances relieve stomach cramps and intestinal problems.
  • The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of oregano oil can also help with long-standing intestinal problems.
  • These properties are also important in the treatment of acne and impure skin.
  • Since oregano oil is extremely anti-inflammatory and stimulates blood circulation, it can be used as a natural antibiotic for tonsillitis or pneumonia. However, you should discuss this with your doctor beforehand.
