How To Pickle Onions: Quick and Easy Recipes for Barbecue and Herring

Pickling onions for different dishes is easy enough. The marinated vegetable can be used as an addition to meat, fish, or a variety of snacks.

How to pickle onions – step-by-step recipe from the cook

Culinarian Eugene Klopotenko advises taking grape or apple cider vinegar to marinate onions. In addition, you need:

  • A head of red onion;
  • 50 g of sugar;
  • 50 g of salt;
  • 100 g of vinegar;
  • 150 ml of water;
  • A few peppercorns and cloves.

Cut the onion into slices, pour water into a container, add all ingredients except spices, and let it cool. Then pour the marinade over the onions, sprinkle with spices, and leave for a few hours, then strain.

Klopotenko added that the above spices can be replaced with bay leaves or turmeric, especially if pickling onions. Then it will have a yellow hue.

Marinate onions for a salad – a quick recipe

Tip: To reduce the process to 30 minutes, take hot water instead of cold water. Next, we need:

  • 3 onions;
  • 1 tsp. sugar and salt;
  • 1 tbsp. vinegar;
  • 3 tbsp water.

Chop the onions for the salad, mix the ingredients, and pour in the onions, mix and put to cool.

How to marinate onions for a kebab – tips and recipe

It is better to choose red or purple onions, cut not thin slices, so it will be crispy. Also needed:

  • Onion – 2 pcs;
  • apple cider vinegar – 1 tbsp;
  • water – a cup and a half;
  • sugar – 2 tbsp;
  • salt – 3 tsp.

Start by slicing the onion into thin slices, mix salt and sugar in a deep bowl, and pour warm water and vinegar.

Tip: At this point, stir the salt and sugar in hot water to speed up the process, and then add the vinegar.

Next, put the onions in a pot, pour the marinade to the brim, and cover with a lid. Leave for 60 minutes, then add some dill and oil. So onions will keep in a cold place for up to 14 days.

How to marinate onions for herring – step-by-step preparation

Herring is served necessarily with onions. For marinating you need:

  • 3 onions;
  • 2 tbsp. sugar and oil;
  • 250 ml of water;
  • 3 tbsp. vinegar;
  • 1 tsp. salt;
  • ground pepper.

First, peel and slice the onion, mix the ingredients in a deep bowl, and put the onion in it, leave for about 30 minutes, then drain the marinade, pour the oil over it, sprinkle with pepper, and let it stand for another 30 minutes.
