What Mushrooms Can Be Picked Now: 5 Edible Specimens of September

Mushrooms are a real treasure trove of protein and a nutritious treat for everyone. You can buy them in the store or at the market, but it is much more interesting to find them yourself in the woods.

What are mushrooms – a classification

Before going to the woods to collect mushrooms, it is important to understand their varieties and differences. Experienced mushroom pickers divide this product into four types:

  • Edible – safe, you can eat them even in raw form;
  • conditionally edible – cannot be eaten raw, but can be dried and soaked;
  • Inedible – safe but not tasty;
  • poisonous – dangerous to life because of large amounts of toxins.

Mushrooms are also divided into nutritious, less nutritious, mediocre, and low-value. This classification is rather a folk classification and is inherent in certain mushrooms purely individually.

What edible mushrooms grow in autumn in September

Each season has its own unique crops – they are easier to find in a particular month. This is certainly the case in September, and there are only six types of mushrooms that make the list of popular September mushrooms.


These mushrooms can be found on stumps or on tree trunks, and the easiest way to find the copycat is on the forest floor. The option cap is rounded, convex, up to 8 cm in diameter, and the stalk is up to 15 cm high, hollow, with a ring at the top. The color of the mushroom is light beige. Beech mushrooms grow in families and like high humidity, so they are always abundant in areas of fallen trees and fallen leaves.


One of the most popular and favorite mushrooms of Ukrainians, they grow in well-lit glades and edges. They have a convex, slimy cap, with a diameter of 13 cm. The color varies from brown to yellow to dark brown. The stalk is up to 10 cm high, without an upper ring. They can be boiled, fried, pickled, and preserved for the winter.


This type of mushroom is considered the most valuable and tasty, the cap reaches 45 cm in diameter and the color with age changes from olive to brown. The stalk is up to 26 cm in diameter and is flat with a fine, shallow net on the surface. The ceps can be cooked as desired or made into winter preserves. They can grow as singles or in groups in various types of forests.

Black Boletus

This is the largest September mushroom and many people use it for winter preserves. Its cap is up to 32 cm in diameter and its color varies from olive to black (depending on its age). The height of the stalk – is up to 20 cm. Most often, the black milkcap mushroom lives in mixed forests, where there are more birch trees. This mushroom can be frozen or canned, but dried is not recommended – loses its useful properties.

Oyster mushroom

The mushroom can be found in deciduous forests, it grows on trees. It is noteworthy that the oyster mushroom appears in late August and disappears only closer to winter. Experienced mushroom growers advise cutting the oyster mushroom, the diameter of the caps is not more than 10 cm. It is believed that it is better to eat only the caps and throw away the tough legs, but in fact, they just need a long heat treatment.
