What to Treat the Garden in Autumn: To Protect Against Pests and Diseases

Autumn treatment will help to get rid of all insects that are dangerous for the tree and prevent diseases in the garden. The treatment is carried out in dry and windless weather. Spraying is recommended to be combined with whitewashing the trunks.

When to treat the garden in autumn

It is recommended to treat the tree in autumn twice. The first preventive treatment is carried out at the beginning of autumn, as soon as the harvest from the tree is removed. The second time the garden is sprayed after the beginning of the frost because the insects hide from the frost under the bark. Do it around the end of October or early November, when the temperature at night drops below zero.

What to treat the garden in autumn: the best remedies

  • Against fungal diseases and apple scabs, as well as against pests and their larvae, trees are sprayed with a solution of urea. It is a nitrogen fertilizer, which is sold in the agro-store. Dilute 500 ml of urea in 10 liters of water. The solution is sprinkled on the trees and watered in the soil.
  • A good remedy against powdery mildew, rot, pest larvae, and other tree problems is copper sulfate. 10 g of pellets are diluted in 1 liter of water. The solution is sprayed on the trunks and crown. The younger the trees, the less they need to be treated.
  • Plums, cherries, and apricots are sprayed with a solution of iron sulfate. It is not only effective against moss, scab, and other diseases but also feeds the plants with iron. Dilute 1 kg of vitriol in 15 liters of water.
  • Bordeaux liquid is used to protect the garden from powdery mildew, rot, and fungal diseases. You can buy this product in an agro-store. It treats not only fruit trees, but also grapes and strawberry bushes.
  • Gooseberries, currants, and raspberries are treated in autumn with a solution of soda ash and soap. Dissolve 1 kg of soda and one grated laundry soap in 10 liters of warm water.

Autumn whitewashing of trees

Whether it is necessary to whitewash trees in autumn is a debatable question. Some gardeners believe that whitewashing trees is an unnecessary and outdated practice. Others are convinced that this procedure protects the trunk from pests and winter frosts.

If you have decided to whitewash trees in autumn, we recommend preparing the following mixture: 80 g of casein glue, 500 g of copper sulfate, and 3 kilos of carbonized lime. Mix the ingredients and top up with water until the mixture is similar to sour cream in consistency. Then apply to the trunks in a thin layer.
