The problem when the windshield fogs up in the car can occur at any time of the year. But most often it occurs in the fall and winter and spring due to high humidity and temperature changes.
Why do the glasses inside the car mist up?
One of the most frequent reasons for windshield weeping from inside the car is weather conditions. If there is dampness outside, the evaporating moisture, for example, from people’s clothes, forms condensation on the windows.
There can also be technical problems. For example – “dried up” rubber seals, because of which water in a form of steam is getting inside the car and depositing on glasses.
Also, the windshield may mist up because of problems with ventilation holes or cabin filters. They lead to insufficient air circulation, and increase the level of humidity in the cabin – it’s enough for people to “breathe”.
Problems, because of which the windows in the car seat, maybe with the heater or the climate system. It is possible to correct them in a car service center. By the way, the windows in the car also sweat when the heater is on – the humid air rises up and settles on the windows.
Another common cause of fogging of windows in the car interior is a person after drinking alcohol. In this case, sweating is higher, respectively, moisture concentration increases and leading to fogged windows.
What should be done to prevent fogging of windows in the car?
Not to sweat the windows in the car, you need to turn on the maximum air blowing in the cabin and set the maximum temperature, run the air conditioning, and turn off the recirculation air in the cabin. At the same time, you should take into account that it is undesirable to use the air conditioner in cold weather, because the glass may crack.
But it is better not to solve the problem, but to try to avoid it. For this purpose, it is necessary to:
- keep the windows clean outside and inside;
- to change the saloon filter in time;
- Clean the holes in the climate control or air conditioning;
- Check and clean the drainage holes under the hood.
It is also desirable to keep the fabric products in the cabin dry – seats, upholstery, and even mats. After all, as we remember, excessive moisture evaporates and settles on windows.
Moreover, when the glasses in the car mist up during rain, especially strong, you may need to dry up also the sound insulation.
Also, a special remedy for fogging of glasses in the car should help. They prevent condensate accumulation, and the windows should not fog up. In auto stores, you can find different variants of such auto chemicals. Before using it, the window should be cleaned of saw, grease, and other contaminants.
Well, and if you have a modern car with electric heating or “the windshield” – then there is even nothing to advise. If everything works properly, you shouldn’t have any problems.
Why do the windows in the car sweat from outside
But it also happens that the windshield gets sweaty outside, but not inside the car. This is due to the fact that the temperature outside is lower than in the cabin with a working heater. Moisture accumulates on the warm glass outside because of the temperature difference. This usually occurs if the electric heater does not work properly, or the windshield is damaged.
Sweating glasses in the car – folk remedies
As with the treatment of people, you can get rid of sweating windows in the car with the help of folk remedies. For example, some motorists advise rubbing foam or shaving gel on the glass. You can also apply a mixture of glycerin and alcohol or ammonia. Or try liquid soap or baby shampoo.
They say that you can also rub half a potato on the windows to prevent them from sweating. However, this method is not recommended – the organic substances of potatoes will rot and lead to mold in the car. Also not a good tip – to apply WD-40 on the glass. It will make the windows greasy and worsen visibility.
But still, the most correct option to combat fogged-up windows is the proper use of the climate control unit.
