Delicacies from the Cape

Boerejongens (farm boys), also called Kaapsche Jongens (Cape boys), go well with cheese. Here’s how to make it: Remove the grapes from the stems, wash them, and pierce them several times with a needle. Heat the sugar and water in a saucepan, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves and thickens slightly. Remove from the heat and add the brandy. This makes about 1 1/2 liters. Sterilize preserving jars or twist-off jars, fill them with the grapes, pour in the hot syrup, and seal. The grapes can be stored in a cool, dark place for several months.
