Using leftover bread
Cut or tear the bread into cubes and place in a large bowl. Whisk together the milk, cream, sugar, vanilla sugar, and beaten eggs. Pour everything onto the bread cubes, mix well, and let stand for 10-30 minutes. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 200°C and line a gratin dish with baking paper or lightly grease it. Wash, halve, pit, and dice the peaches, and carefully add them to the bread mixture. Pour the mixture into the dish, sprinkle with almonds, top with butter, and bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes. Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing. Tastes delicious both hot and cold. Tip: Try it with other fruit, including canned fruit. The fruit should weigh between 150 and 200 g. A small can of mandarin oranges is ideal for this! Note: Adjust the amount of milk depending on how dry the bread is. It’s better to use a little less milk beforehand if the bread isn’t very dry.
