Is bubble tea allowed during pregnancy?

If you are pregnant in midsummer and need a little refreshment, a bubble tea is the ideal way to cool down – or rather not? Here we explain whether bubble tea is healthy and whether you can drink it without hesitation during pregnancy:

  • The trend drink bubble tea is usually prepared on a basis of green or black tea. However, there are also varieties that are mixed with juice, milk or yoghurt.
  • The bubble tea also contains syrup, ice cubes and bubbles, i.e. pearls made from cassava root filled with syrup.
  • So most bubble teas contain caffeine. The caffeine content of a cup roughly corresponds to that of cola: there are 50 milligrams of caffeine in a 200 milliliter cup of bubble tea. According to the European Food Safety Authority, you should consume a maximum of 200 milligrams of caffeine per day as a pregnant woman.
  • In addition to the caffeine, the high sugar content of bubble tea is also critical: a 500 milliliter cup contains 50 to 60 grams of sugar and around 500 kilocalories. Also colorings, flavorings and preservatives.
  • Too much caffeine during pregnancy is transmitted directly to the unborn child, accelerates the heartbeat and stimulates the nervous system. Too much sugar can also increase the risk of gestational diabetes.
  • So if you want to drink bubble tea during pregnancy, it’s not forbidden, but it’s still not the best idea. There are healthier soft drinks.
  • You should refrain from drinking the drink regularly due to the caffeine and high sugar content. However, if you indulge in bubble tea once in a while, or have had one while pregnant, it is not critical.
