Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 2 onions
  • 1 kg white cabbage
  • 2 tbsp lard or goose fat
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds
  • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 apple, sour
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 pinch(s) of sugar

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour

Peel and finely chop the onions. Trim and quarter the cabbage, removing the stalk. Wash the cabbage and cut into fine strips. Sauté the onions in lard in a large pot. Add the cabbage and sauté over high heat. Sprinkle with sugar and caraway seeds. Drizzle with vinegar and pour in a little hot water. Simmer the cabbage over low heat for about 15 minutes. Peel and quarter the apple, and remove the core. Finely dice the apple and mix it with the cabbage. Cook everything for about another 15 minutes. Season with pepper, salt, and a little sugar, if desired. Serve with roast pork or goulash and boiled potatoes.
