nice and sweet

Mix the melted butter with the sugar well. Whisk in the egg and milk. Sift the flour with the baking powder and mix with the egg and milk to form a dough. Butter 5 small baking dishes or a larger casserole dish and pour in the batter. Bake the dough in the oven at 160°C (top/bottom heat) for about 25-35 minutes, depending on the thickness. Do the skewer test. Meanwhile, bring the ingredients for the syrup together to a boil briefly and allow to cool slightly. Remove the dish(s) from the oven and immediately spread the maple syrup over the pastry. To ensure the syrup is absorbed, pierce the pastry deeply all around the side with a skewer. Serve the lukewarm, soggy pastry with the walnut ice cream.
