Chakalaka Salad – Greetings from South Africa

The perfect chakalaka salad – greetings from south africa recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

  • 3 tbsp Sunflower oil
  • 1 Onion, size 40/42, “stripped” and grated
  • 2 Garlic cloves chopped
  • 1 green Pepper, stripped of the seeds and diced
  • 1 Red Bell pepper – did not show up for the photo op
  • 2 tbsp Fresh ginger, finely diced
  • 1 Chilli pepper extra hot, without seeds, finely diced
  • 2 tsp Curry powder
  • 1 Medium-Sized cauliflower cut into florets
  • 1 Can Baked beans, 400 g
  • Salt pepper
  • Paprika powder

Preliminary remark:

  1. Our daughter wished for an African evening for her birthday, which for me meant “experimental kitchen” … Not everything tasted the Central European palate, but this salad was very well received by all guests 🙂

Preparation:

  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan or large pan and fry the chopped onion, garlic, ginger, paprika and chilli along with the curry and paprika powder for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the cauliflower florets, which shouldn’t be too big, and gently cook everything together for about 15 minutes, until the vegetables are soft but not “limp”.
  3. Add the white beans – without the can – and heat.
  4. Season with mild to hot spices according to the feel and shape of the waves and serve cold or warm.
  5. This vegetable salad can be kept in the refrigerator for several days – unless it is eaten beforehand …
