Cheesesteak sandwiches

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 400 g beef strips
  • 1 handful of mushrooms
  • 1 handful of gherkins
  • 1 bunch of spring onions
  • 1 garlic clove(s)
  • 50 ml beef stock, alternatively bouillon
  • cream
  • salt and pepper
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Tabasco
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • Cheddar cheese, grated (approx. 150 g)
  • e.g. parsley
  • 4 hot dog buns

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 20 minutes; Total time approx. 30 minutes

Bread roll filled with beef and mushroom strips

Remove any tendons from the beef, wash, and pat dry. Season with salt and pepper. Peel and finely chop the mushrooms, spring onions, and gherkins. Peel and press the garlic (or finely chop if you don’t have a garlic press). Cut the bread roll in half lengthwise. Preheat oven to 200°C (top/bottom heat). Heat oil in a pan and fry the beef until almost cooked through. Set the meat aside in a bowl and collect the resulting cooking juices (if you don’t have any, use stock instead). In the same pan, fry the spring onions, garlic, gherkins, and mushrooms until the mushrooms are well browned. Add the meat and stir everything together. Pour the cooking juices (or stock) into the vegetables. Add cream, if desired. The beef shouldn’t be swimming in the sauce; it should just be moist. Add tomato paste and, if desired, parsley, and season with Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir everything until it reaches a uniform color. If it’s a bit dry, feel free to add a little more cream. Place the bun halves in the oven for a maximum of 3 minutes. Sprinkle evenly grated cheddar cheese in the pan and stir everything gently. Place the bottom halves of the buns on plates, spread the mixture on top, and place the top halves on top. Serve with French fries, sweet potato fries, wedges, or other unhealthy side dishes. Tip: If you have any leftover mixture, you can also use it the next day with tagliatelle or spaetzle. Then, when frying, it’s best to add a little more cream, as the mixture becomes very stiff. Note: I first saw this fast food dish in the movie Creed – Rocky’s Legacy. Since there are many variations of cheesesteak, I created my own creation. I hope I can help some hobby cooks with this.
