Clean Chinese Cabbage – That’s How it Works

Chinese cabbage can be used in many ways in the kitchen. Why you should clean it and how it works, read this practical tip.

Cleaning Chinese cabbage: A guide

Whether cooked as a side dish or as a salad: There are delicious recipes for Chinese cabbage. However, before you start processing, you have to clean it. Here’s how to do it:

  • Chinese cabbage grows relatively dense. For this reason, impurities are more likely to be present in the outer area of the head.
  • Remove the outer layers of leaves. The inside of the cabbage should be mostly clean.
  • Cut the head in half. Hold the two pieces one after the other under cold running water for a few seconds. Gently push the cabbage apart to fan it out.
  • Impurities such as soil or residues of pesticides that have found their way inside are washed away.
  • If you intend to eat the cabbage raw, be sure to wash the head carefully.
  • Before further processing, remove the stalk. This one is inedible. To do this, simply cut it out of two halves. However, you can leave the leaf veins (even thicker ones) on the cabbage.
