Coconut – Delicious Palm Fruit

Botanically, coconuts are not nuts, but drupes. The spherical palm fruits reach a diameter of 12 – 20 cm.

Inside the shell is the edible white flesh and coconut water – a refreshing treat.

Use

Poke holes in two of the three “eyes” on the outer shell and collect the tasty coconut water in a container. It is well suited for sauces and cocktails. To get to the pulp, it is best to carefully break open the skin with a hammer. It can easily be pried out with a knife. Alternative: Cook the anhydrous coconut in the oven at 200°C for ten minutes until the shell cracks and separates from the flesh. The so-called coconut milk, which is obtained from the pulp, is also versatile. Here’s how to make your own coconut milk. Storage

Unopened coconuts can be kept for about two to four months when stored in a cool and dry place. Coconut meat can be stored well wrapped in the refrigerator for about a week. Frozen even up to nine months.
