Fruit or nut? – these are the important properties of coconut
- Coconuts can be processed in many ways and not only enrich savory and sweet dishes but also taste particularly good in drinks.
- However, anyone who hears the name “coconut” initially suspects that it must be a nut – after all, the word “nut” is already in the name. But that is not correct. The coconut is a stone fruit.
- Just like sweet and sour cherries, peaches and mangoes, coconuts are stone fruits and are therefore also referred to as fruit. The name of the popular fruit is therefore misleading.
- By the way, coconuts grow on palm trees, more precisely on coconut palm. The coconut water contained in the fruit forms the coconut flesh over time. If you want to drink a lot of coconut milk, you should therefore use unripe fruit. They contain more coconut water or milk than ripe fruits.
- The tropical fruit contains around 360 kilocalories per 100 grams and is rich in vitamins and minerals. Coconuts in particular contain sufficient amounts of potassium.
