Coffee intolerance – these are the causes

An allergy is a reaction of the immune system to actually harmless substances.

  • On the other hand, if you have an intolerance to certain foods, your body cannot properly process certain ingredients. For example, an important enzyme is usually missing.
  • Caffeine is usually responsible for the intolerance to coffee. This caffeine inhibits the work of the so-called diamine oxidase. This is an enzyme that breaks down histamine in the body.
  • Incidentally, not only coffee inhibits diamine oxidase, but all caffeinated drinks such as cola or green tea.
    If you suffer from histamine intolerance, this is often accompanied by a coffee intolerance.
  • The same applies if you also cannot tolerate other foods.

Signs of coffee intolerance

As with any food that you cannot tolerate, if you have a coffee intolerance, you will feel nauseous after drinking the drink.

  • This is accompanied by other complaints in the gastrointestinal tract such as flatulence or diarrhea.
  • Stomach pain can also be a sign of coffee intolerance.
  • Anyone who cannot tolerate coffee and still drinks it sweats easily and often trembles.
  • An increased urge to urinate and palpitations can also indicate a coffee intolerance.
  • The caffeine in coffee is a well-known pick-me-up. If you drink a lot of coffee, you have to reckon with insomnia. In the case of coffee intolerance, this can already be the case with small amounts.
  • Tip: If you don’t want to completely do without the drink despite intolerance, reach for decaffeinated coffee. This variant can significantly reduce the symptoms of coffee intolerance.
