Difference Between Cappuccino And Latte Macchiato: Simply Explained

The difference between cappuccino and latte macchiato can be seen at first glance if prepared correctly. For many, however, both specialties are simply coffee with milk. Find out here what the difference is.

That’s the difference between cappuccino and latte macchiato

Cappuccino and latte macchiato have one thing in common: both consist of coffee and milk. The differences are mainly in the ratio of these two components as well as in the preparation and presentation.

  • Presentation: Cappuccino is served in a flat, bulbous cup. Latte macchiato, on the other hand, is drunk from a tall glass.
  • Milk foam: The two specialties also differ in the type of milk foam. While a cappuccino has a semi-liquid milk froth, a latte macchiato is characterized by a rather firm froth.
  • Our tip: A suitable mnemonic to remember the difference between the coffee specialties: latte macchiato is more like milk with coffee, while cappuccino is coffee with milk.

Differences in preparation

The biggest difference between cappuccino and latte macchiato lies in the preparation.

  • The cappuccino consists of one-third espresso and two-thirds milk. During preparation, the espresso is first poured into the cup, followed by the milk froth. As a result, the two components are separated from each other.
  • Latte macchiato, on the other hand, consists of one-quarter espresso and three-quarters milk and milk froth. First, the milk is poured into the glass, followed by the milk froth, and finally the espresso. Due to the special way it is prepared, the latte macchiato has the characteristic three layers that are visible from the outside.
  • However, both specialties should not be confused with classic milk coffee. This is not made with espresso beans but with coffee beans, consists of equal parts coffee and milk, and is served in a cup.
