Don’t Always Put Sausage on a Slice of Bread for Children

Which types of sausage are suitable for children under the age of two?

Every now and then, children are allowed to have sausage as a topping on their bread. Sausages and other meat products such as small sausages are particularly popular with children. They contribute to the supply of iron, protein and B vitamins, but they also provide a lot of fat and cholesterol. As a result, obesity and high cholesterol levels are becoming increasingly common in childhood.

It is therefore important to use low-fat sausage products. Turkey breast and boiled ham, for example, contain up to 10 percent fat.

Finely chopped boiled sausages such as Lyoner and Jagdwurst are also suitable. Wiener sausages, bratwurst and bockwurst have 20-30 percent fat. Liverwurst and salami already provide 30-40 percent fat.

When buying sausages, also pay attention to the salt content. You can find this out in the nutritional value table on the packaging. Compare the salt content of the different types of sausage very carefully. According to the traffic light check of the consumer centers, the salt content should never be more than 1.5 grams.

It is important to convey to the children that sausage does not have to be placed on bread every day. Cream cheese is also suitable as a topping, topped with tomato or cucumber slices, herbal quark and homemade spread. Small skewers with bread, banana pieces, cheese cubes and grapes are also popular with children.
