Drying Plums: How to Make Your Own Dried Fruit

You can easily make dried plums at home or other dried fruits yourself. There are two methods to do this, which we will introduce to you here.

Drying plums: the preparations

Plums are a healthy and delicious fruit. To preserve the harvest, you can dry the fruit yourself. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

  • Only use freshly picked plums for drying. Fallen fruit is not suitable as it is already damaged or may have pests.
  • Wash the plums and dry them thoroughly. You can also rub the fruit with a damp kitchen towel. It is important that the fruit is not wet before you dry it.
  • Halve the plums and remove the pits and stems.
  • Lay the fruit loosely on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or on the rack of the dehydrator. The plums should have enough space and not be too dense or on top of each other.

Methods of drying plums

You can dry plums in the oven or in a food dehydrator.

  • Heat the oven to 50 degrees. Place the baking sheet with the plums in the oven. You can also put several trays in the oven at once. Change the position of the trays often so that the fruit can dry evenly.
  • Hold the oven door ajar with a wooden skewer or wooden spoon. The released moisture can escape.
  • Drying takes about 24 hours in the oven. Keep checking on how the plums are doing and adjust the temperature if it gets too hot or too cool.
  • In the dehydrator, you dry the plums at 70 degrees for around 16 hours. For a perfect result, be sure to follow the operating instructions for your device.
  • The plums are done drying when their skin has become leathery and firm. The fruit is no longer sticky. The flesh should remain soft.
