Eating fruit in the evening is not unhealthy per se, but it is actually not suitable for some people. We will show you here why this is and how you can tell that you should avoid eating fruit in the evening.

Eat fruit in the evening or rather do without it – simply explained

In addition to vegetables, fruit is of course also a valuable source of dietary fiber, minerals and vitamins. However, if fruit is mainly consumed in the evening, this can cause some problems.

  • Heartburn : If you have a sensitive stomach, you should avoid eating very acidic fruits such as citrus fruits or apples in the evening. If you often suffer from heartburn, the fruit acid can increase the belching of stomach acid – especially if you lie down shortly afterwards.
  • Digestion : Fruit cannot be digested as well in the evening, remains in the large intestine and begins to ferment there. This can lead to bloating and abdominal pain.
  • Lose weight : In addition to its valuable ingredients, fruit also contains a lot of fructose. Eating too much fruit can affect weight loss. Early in the day, the body is good at converting sugar into energy, but in the evening, the liver processes the remaining carbohydrates into fat. This fat remains in the body and is stored in the cells over the long term. The fructose also causes blood sugar to shoot up, which can easily make you hungry again.
  • Sleep : Even if you find that you have trouble falling asleep after a meal containing fruit in the evening, you should eat the fruit at a different time of the day. The energy that the fruit provides through the fructose can certainly make you feel awake again. In addition, the body has to increase the metabolism to digest fruit – this can also prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep.

Which fruit is also suitable in the evening

However, you don’t usually have to do without fruit completely in the evening. Here, listen to your body and eat the types of fruit that you don’t see any problems with.

  • As a general rule, focus on low-sugar and low-acid fruit later in the day. These include, for example, watermelon, apricots, raspberries, guavas, grapefruit, blueberries and papaya.
  • Also eat the fruit in smaller amounts throughout the day. In the evening you can eat about a handful of it.
  • Additionally, taking a little walk after eating fruit can help. Especially when your stomach is rumbling, the movement provides relief and stimulates digestion.
  • In addition, if you have flatulence and a bloated stomach, you can try to relieve the pain with a gastrointestinal-friendly tea made from anise, caraway or fennel.
