Elstar – An Apple Variety

Elstar has been one of the most popular apple varieties in Germany for many years, if not the most popular. Elstar is a two-tone apple: the skin is yellow and on the sunny side between orange-red and bright red. It is firm on the outside and has a crumbly flesh on the inside that does not fall apart in the heat.

Origin

Elstar is a cross between Golden Delicious and Ingrid Marie; it was found in the Netherlands in 1955 and has been distributed in western Europe since 1972.

Season

Elstar is sold from early September to May.

Taste

The apple tastes fruity and spicy, slightly sour and refreshing.

Use

Very suitable for baking cakes and strudel. A healthy snack raw.

Storage

Elstar is ready to eat immediately after harvesting and immediately unfolds its full flavor. If you want to enjoy the full aroma, you should not store this apple variety for too long, but eat it within the first week. Of course, Elstar can also be stored for a certain period of time, but you should pay attention to the temperature. Up to 4 °C is well suited for storage. Elstar stays crisp and fresh in the fridge. Like other apples, Elstar should not be mixed with types of fruit such as B. bananas are stored.
