Regardless of whether they are fat or water-soluble: vitamins are not only healthy, they are essential for our organism. However, there is a small but crucial difference between the two groups of vitamins.

  • The water-soluble vitamins include the B vitamins. These are vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B7 (biotin), folic acid – sometimes also referred to as vitamin B9 or B11 – as well as vitamin B12 (cobalamin).
  • Furthermore, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is one of the water-soluble vitamins.
  • What the water-soluble vitamins have in common is that they are excreted naturally. The body doesn’t store them, so you have to keep replenishing them. However, this also has the advantage that it is almost impossible to overdose on water-soluble vitamins.
  • However, the same applies to vitamins: there are no rules without exceptions. Although vitamin B12 is one of the water-soluble vitamins, it is temporarily stored by the body in the liver.

Fat-soluble vitamins – that’s what makes them special

In contrast to water-soluble vitamins, the body stores fat-soluble vitamins.

  • The fat-soluble vitamins include vitamin A (retinol), vitamin D (cholecalciferol), vitamin E (tocopherol), and vitamin K (phylloquinone).
  • The fat-soluble vitamins are stored by the body, for example in the liver, for some time before they leave the organism via the intestines. If you supply the body with too many fat-soluble vitamins, this could trigger a toxic effect.
  • With the help of natural vitamin suppliers, such as vegetables, fruit, grains, or eggs, it is almost impossible to consume so many fat-soluble vitamins that you poison yourself. The danger exists above all with the intake of artificial vitamins, in which case an overdose can happen quickly.
  • The body can react to an overdose of fat-soluble vitamins with headaches, nausea, or blurred vision, for example. If you are losing an unnatural amount of hair, this could also be the result of an overdose of fat-soluble vitamins.
