An indispensable pregnancy vitamin is vitamin B9, also known as folic acid. It plays an essential role in the formation and division of cells and can protect the unborn child from a certain form of malformations, the so-called neural tube defects. This affects the child’s brain and spinal cord.

Gynecologists, therefore, recommend the following:

  • As early as four weeks before a planned pregnancy, 400 micrograms of vitamin folic acid should be taken every day.
  • This should be continued until the end of the twelfth week of pregnancy (GW).
  • 800 micrograms of folic acid daily should be taken by pregnant women who did not take folic acid supplements before conception.

In addition to folic acid, iodine is an important trace element during pregnancy. It promotes the mental and physical development of the child and – taken in sufficient quantities – protects the mother from an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter). The doctor usually decides individually how much iodine a pregnant woman needs. It is important, for example, how much sea fish or iodized table salt is consumed.

How Much Vitamin A During Pregnancy?

Vitamin A is important during pregnancy for the growth and development of different cells, tissue, and, above all, the child’s lungs. A balanced diet is a good way to meet the vitamin A needs of mother and child.

This includes:

  • Milk and milkproducts
  • Meat
  • A lot of fruits and vegetables

Doctors advise against taking additional vitamin A preparations or multivitamin preparations with vitamin A. The consumption of the liver, which contains a lot of vitamin A, should also be avoided, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. The reason: an overdose of the vitamin can damage the unborn child. How much vitamin A is needed during pregnancy? From the fourth month of pregnancy, it is 1,100 micrograms per day.

How much vitamin D is in pregnancy?

During pregnancy, vitamin D is particularly important for the bone health of the mother and the bone growth of the child. It also helps to protect mother and child from pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes, so-called preeclampsia, and premature birth.

Since vitamin D can be produced by the body itself with the help of sunlight, doctors recommend regular exposure to the sun – even for pregnant women. Between June and August, for example, five to ten minutes of sunlight per day are enough on the skin of the face, hands, and arms. High-fat fish such as salmon and herring provide additional vitamin D during pregnancy and prevent a deficiency. The doctor only recommends vitamin D supplements if a deficiency has been proven. Recent studies show that both an undersupply and an oversupply of vitamin D during pregnancy can increase the risk of allergies in the child.
