Fish in onion sauce

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 800 g fish fillet(s) (salmon trout) or fillet of your choice
  • 1 ½ tsp turmeric
  • 3 onions
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 2 chili peppers, fresh
  • 1 piece(s) ginger
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 3 tbsp ghee, alternatively neutral oil
  • 2 bay leaves
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 3 tbsp yogurt (whole milk)
  • 2 tsp mustard oil
  • 1 tsp spice mix (garam masala)
  • 150 ml water

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 30 minutes

Cut the fish into 6 cm pieces. Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon turmeric. Peel or wash the onions and tomatoes and chop them into pieces. Chop the ginger, garlic, and chilies. Sauté the bay leaves and cumin seeds in heated ghee for 1 minute. Add the onions and fry until dark brown. Gradually add the ginger, garlic, chilies, and turmeric and fry for 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes and yogurt and mix well. Pour in 150 ml water and bring to a boil. Season with salt. Carefully add the fish pieces and cover well with the sauce. Let it simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes. Before serving, drizzle with mustard oil and sprinkle with garam masala, turning carefully. Rice goes best with this dish.
