Peel and finely chop the onions, or simply slice them. Place the sliced onions in a saucepan with the sunflower oil and salt and cook over medium heat for about 6-7 minutes until softened without browning, stirring frequently. Once the water has evaporated, increase the heat to high and add the sugar. Caramelize for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Then add the whiskey and carefully ignite the vapors from the side of the pan. Wait until the flame goes out on its own, stirring gently once in between. Once the flame has gone out, reduce the heat to medium and simmer the onions for about 5 minutes. Season to taste with cumin, ground pepper, and balsamic vinegar. The onions taste perfect warm or cold with burgers or grilled meat.
