Freezing Lettuce – Is That Possible? Quickly Explained

That’s why you shouldn’t freeze lettuce

Many tasty and crunchy salads are available all year round. However, these then come from a cultural attitude and are not outdoor salads, which taste even more intense. Of course, it would be nice if you could freeze salads.

  • Unfortunately, lettuce is high in water. When it freezes, the water expands and destroys the cell structure of the lettuce.
  • As a result, when it thaws, it becomes mushy and doesn’t look as nice anymore.
  • So it is better to buy the salad fresh and in season.

These plants freeze well

Some foods, on the other hand, still taste great when thawed if you freeze them properly. These foods are also often steamed or boiled. The heat allows the excess water to escape from the food more quickly and the food stays crisper than with slow defrosting.

  • For this reason, leaf spinach is an exception, as it also becomes mushy when thawed. However, spinach is often heated anyway and collapses. Only the raw spinach leaves are crunchy.
  • Food that is only harvested in autumn and winter freezes well. Cabbage is therefore generally well suited as frozen food.
  • You can also freeze peas, carrots, and asparagus well.
  • Mushrooms and peppers are other foods that freeze well.
