Fresh Matjessalat

The perfect fresh matjessalat recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

  • 5 Pc. Herring fillets
  • 0,5 Pc. Apple
  • 1 Pc. Onion
  • 1 Pc. Tomato
  • 8 Discs Cucumber fresh
  • 2 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil
  • Vinegar
  • Pepper from the grinder
  1. Cut the matjes fillet into fork bites (approx. 3×4 cm). Cut the apple, cucumber, tomato and onion into small cubes. Core the tomato beforehand. Season with vinegar, oil and pepper. The fish is salty enough. Mix everything and let it steep for half a day.
  2. Season with pepper mill, vinegar and olive oil.
  3. Goes well with crusty bread.
