a journey through the orchard
First, fill four clean 250ml preserving jars (e.g., collected canning jars) with boiling water, along with the lids. Wash, halve, and pit the cherries. Wash the strawberries and cut them into small pieces along with the pineapple and melon. Place everything in a saucepan and bring to the boil, then add the gelling sugar and simmer for three minutes. Roughly puree the fruit mixture with a hand blender, leaving a few pieces in the jam. Finally, stir in real vanilla, if desired. Pour the hot jam into the jars, screw on the lids, and turn upside down for five minutes. Then turn the jars upside down and let them cool overnight. The jam tastes great as a classic spread on bread or as a dip with various cheeses.
