with American-style vanilla sauce
Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish. In a bowl, combine the bread cubes, apples, and raisins. In a small pan, add the brown sugar, milk, and butter and heat until the butter is completely melted, stirring occasionally. Pour this liquid over the bread and apple mixture. Pour everything into the prepared baking dish. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs with the cinnamon and vanilla extract and pour evenly over the ingredients in the dish. Bake the casserole for 40-50 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the custard. Combine the sugar, milk, and butter in a small pan and heat gently, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil briefly and then remove from the heat immediately. Finally, stir in the vanilla extract. This custard is very American and very rich, but delicious. Since the fat floats to the top, give it another quick stir before serving.
