Grandma's chopped beans in light sauce

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 600 g beans (green beans)
  • Salt
  • 2 pinch(s) savory, dried
  • 60 g butter
  • 2 tbsp bacon, streaky, diced
  • 1 onion(s), diced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 250 ml milk
  • nutmeg
  • 1 bunch of parsley
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Total time approx. 20 minutes

Traditional dish from the north and west of Germany

Wash and trim the beans, and slice them thinly. Bring salted water with savory to a boil, add the beans, and cook for about 10 minutes. Drain and reserve the cooking water. Melt the butter in a saucepan and sauté the bacon cubes and onion until translucent. Add the flour and sauté. Measure out 1/4 liter of cooking broth and add it while stirring. Stir in the milk and simmer the sauce for 10 minutes over very low heat. Add the beans and heat through. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper, and serve sprinkled with parsley. Serve with boiled potatoes and fresh bratwurst.
