Gyros with Metaxa sauce

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 2 bell peppers, red
  • 150 g mushrooms, fresh
  • 700 g pork strips with gyros spice
  • 2 tbsp Metaxa
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp crème fraîche or sour cream
  • 200 g Gouda, grated

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour

Preheat the oven to 200°C top/bottom heat (175°C fan-assisted). Cut the bell peppers into thin strips, clean and wash the mushrooms. Halve or quarter large ones if necessary. Heat oil in a wide pan. Brown the bell peppers and mushrooms on all sides for about 3 minutes, then remove. Brown the meat in batches in the frying fat for 5-6 minutes on all sides. Return all the meat, bell peppers, and mushrooms to the pan. Add Metaxa and tomato paste and bring to a boil. Stir in the sour cream. Transfer the gyros to a baking dish and sprinkle with cheese. Bake in the hot oven for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
