Harvesting Dill – You Should Pay Attention To That

Harvest and store dill tips

From May to October, you can harvest the dill planted outdoors.

  • The dill tips are particularly aromatic. Cut off as much of each tip as you need.
  • Pay attention to a balanced ratio when cutting. In good conditions, the dill grows back and you can harvest it several times a year.
  • Dried dill quickly loses its flavor. It is better to cut the tips into small pieces and freeze them. With this method, the spice will keep for several months.
  • Well washed and wrapped in a damp cloth, you can store the dill in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
  • Of course, whole plants can also be processed. You can also finely chop and freeze the stalks.

Harvest dill seeds and use them as a spice

If your dill blooms in autumn, the seeds can be harvested and reused many times over.

  • Watch the umbels of flowers. Once the seeds turn brown, cut off the entire flower.
  • You can now tie the flowers together, hang them up and dry them. Since the seeds will loosen during the drying phase, it’s best to tie a paper bag around the buds.
  • You can store the harvested seeds in an airtight container for many months.
  • Tip: Dishes can be refined with the dill seeds, just like with fresh dill. Infused as tea, the seeds help with digestive problems and insomnia.
