Gingerbread stays fresh for a long time if you store it dry, cool, and as airtight as possible. Tin cans are best for storing gingerbread. So that you can enjoy the Christmas spice cake for a long time, we will show you how to store gingerbread properly.
How to keep gingerbread fresh
Gingerbread has an incomparable taste and conveys a Christmas flair like hardly any other pastry. Stored correctly, gingerbread lasts at least two months – so there is nothing wrong with baking gingerbread before the Advent season. It is not without reason that traditional gingerbread manufacturers still deliver the Christmas cookies in tin cans today. The beautifully designed tins not only spread nostalgic charm, they are also perfect for storing gingerbread, as the pastries are kept airtight in them. Tip: Don’t throw away the empty cans, then you can use them later to store your homemade gingerbread.
Storage tips for homemade gingerbread
- Freshly baked gingerbread comes out of the oven fluffy and fragrant. After cooling it is wonderfully soft. To keep it consistent and not hard, place it in the storage jar as soon as it cools, wrapped, and separated with layers of parchment or parchment paper.
- Only close the can lightly for a few days so that the aroma can develop fully.
- For storage, you can add half an apple or washed orange peel (please change it every two days!), this gives the pastry moisture and additional aroma. In this way, gingerbread remains or becomes soft again.
Just try it!
Craving for gingerbread?
Of course, you can also give away homemade gingerbread to friends, neighbors, or colleagues, for example, our sugar-sweet gingerbread men or almond gingerbread. Storage shouldn’t be an issue in this case, because the Christmas treat will definitely (and enjoy!) be eaten up right away. And if you want something more unusual, how about our delicious potato gingerbread?
By the way: Brown gingerbread dough is a so-called storage dough, which means that it only develops its full aroma after several weeks of storage in the refrigerator. The ingredients can mix and combine in peace and quiet. So if you plan to bake gingerbread cookies from brown dough for Christmas, plan ahead. And if you miss the “timing”, no problem: gingerbread always tastes good, even at Easter!
