To cut iceberg lettuce, first cut the head in half and then separate the two halves again. So the stalk is exposed – and you can easily remove it. Other than that, there isn’t one universal method to cut iceberg lettuce properly. In the end, your preferences decide. For long strips, cut the quarters lengthwise, for shorter ones, cut across the width. There are also no regulations regarding the width of the stripes. It is best to detach only as many leaves from the head as you need and then trim them to size. At the same time, there is the question of whether you cut or pluck iceberg lettuce. In fact, the latter allows you to better conserve nutrients. Because you pluck the leaves, automatically divide them along the leaf veins and thereby preserve the structure. As a result, no plant sap escapes. Of course, you can also proceed completely differently and cut iceberg lettuce with the Nicer Dicer. Cut and wash the iceberg lettuce
If you want to remove the stalk from a head of iceberg lettuce, you can simply cut it out – or you can use a trick: To do this, take the head in both hands and then hit it firmly on a kitchen board with the stalk down. The vibration loosens the stalk and you can pull it out. You should always wash iceberg lettuce. To do this, pluck individual leaves from the head and then place them in a water bath. Then it’s off to the salad spinner. Because: The drier the salad, the more dressing will stick. Incidentally, iceberg lettuce is rich in vitamin A and contains vitamin B9.
